Although not strictly the last Friday of the month , this was the Last Friday
5km of the calender year. Brought forward due to the hectic Christmas period ,
the course was altered to bypass the huge winter Christmas Fair at Hyde Park.
The new course was two smaller laps , which I feel is infact a better course
than the original 5km course. Myself, Joe and Paul (Beds County) travelled up on
the train and met Alan the teaboy by the start area. A runner came over when he
saw our Bedford Harriers vests and commented how much he enjoyed running the
Bedford Half Marathon, and how well organised it was. I did see a couple of
runners wearing the souvenir sweatshirt. Paul was hoping for a quick start but
found himself blocked in at the start, and didn't come on my shoulder until a
mile. My legs felt tired and sluggish and I was unable to pick my pace up on the
2nd lap and finished just behind Paul. Alan put in a huge sprint in the last 100
metres and passed about 5 runners. Joe was the last Harrier to finish, he had a
sudden burst of energy in the home straight and overtake a crisp packet , a
parked van , and a child on a tricycle. Once Joe had got his breathe back (about
2 hours later) he commented that 5kms should come with a Government Health
warning. Well, that's it for this year, if any other Harriers would like to do
this race, then be sure to enter 3 or 4 weeks in advance. You need to do 6 or
more of the Serpentine Last Friday 5kms to be included in the age graded
Championship.
