VETS AC, founded in 1931, claims to be the oldest 'Veterans Only' club in the UK, and offers track, field, and road events in the delightful setting of Battersea Park for athletes over 35. Male and Female Veterans from all other clubs are made welcome and the vast accumulation of ability and experience is most impressive.

With a total entry of nearly 300 and 16 different events on offer, it was marvellous to be back in the buzz of a full, well organized track and field meeting. Predictably the Race Walk attracted a modest entry, there being nine contestants mostly of the more senior age groups. 5th place in this line-up felt reasonable, but any satisfaction from overtaking a sprightly 63 year-old on the home straight was surpassed by amazement when I learned that the Race-Walk was the sixth of the ten events the chap was contesting overall!
