One year on from contesting this
open event to kick-start a return to racewalking after quite a while,
the only race walk on offer south of the Thames this weekend was again
fought out between around twenty 'experienced' and highly competitive
fanatics. The only difference this year was that the youngest competitor
was the solitary M40 walker, as compared with one M45 last year.
With quality rather quantity being
being a main feature, the race winner, Ian Richards, a 60 year-old
member of the hosting club and veteran of the Moscow Olympics, took just
48m 26s to get round - a time which many veterans would be happy with in
a 10k running event. With this time producing an age-graded score of
99.09% on the race result, it would seem that the walking age-graded
tables are more generous than those for runners - where else as a
'novice' contestant would you pick up a score of 75% for finishing last!
