For a birthday "treat" I decided  a few months ago, before moving here, to enter this Marathon here in North Carolina.

The Outer Banks is a 200+-mile stretch of narrow islands covering much of the NC coastline.  It's a major tourist destination and has never ending beaches and sand dunes and is also where the Wright Brothers made their first powered flight 100+ years ago.

It's a good five and a half hour drive from where we live, so we travelled out on Saturday to collect race packs and arrive in good time for
an early 7:20am race start on Sunday.

It's a whole weekend of events with a 5k, 10k, half and full marathon. Excellent and friendly atmosphere in an amazing setting.

The course was a pretty flat one, running North to South with a finish on Manteo Island where an end of race party with bands and BBQ's greeted
the finishers.  Despite being sandwiched between the sea and Chesapeake Bay, there was barely a breeze and perfect temperature for running
of around 60 degrees. The course was on the main highways with long stretches and sections in the back street lines with beach houses.

Out of around 1150 doing the marathon I came in 59th and thoroughly enjoyed it.
