Brass Monkeys!

Today's race was a nice late start,  11am which meant it wasn't as cold as it could have been, good job as it was very blustery at Rockingham Speedway. Thinking I was a lone Harrier I turned up only to be delighted to see top cake award winner and my rival for the title, Stodge, Mr Parkrun Steve Ball and his speedy son and the delightful Joya who I rapidly talked into coming to circuits on a Friday (you have to come now Joya!)

We set of with the other runners straight into a full on headwind, four laps to complete. I've never been a fan of lapped races and this was no exception, the best bit was when we turned away from the wind with a slight downhill where I managed to pick up speed. On the third lap I saw Steve in the distance so targeted him, noticing on my garmin that some of my km splits were in the  4.39-5 min range I was both pleased and shocked, I haven't managed anything like this in a fair few months so this also spurred me on. I passed Steve and we grunted 'well dones' as we dug in to get it finished and waved at Joya as I passed her looking comfortable on her third lap. As I approached the finish I noticed my watch reading 10k well before I crossed the line with a sub 50min time, what a shame!! I also noticed Steve right on my heels and we arrived at the end together - I think we both benefitted from a little competition :) Final result a pleasing 51.13  recovering and exploring our goody bags we saw Joya arrive at the finish... We were both puzzled as we knew she was on lap three so I gingerly told her and she hadn't realised, we had a giggle and off she went to do a final lap!

A great flat course and fantastic marshals although it measured 10.30km
