It was with some trepidation that I
stood on the quayside on Friday 4th at 2300hrs in Agaete, at the
north of the island. My attempt at this course last year came to an end at
approx 40K following a heavy fall on the first (somewhat notorious) decent
(after approx 11K). This time, completion was the only acceptable option.
Although shorter than UTMB (Mont Blanc),
this course has more ‘climb per metre travelled’ by approx 10%. The weather was
cooler than I expected, with low cloud above 1500m. The highest point on the
race (1930m) holding small patches of snow.
Good support and well marked. Plenty of
camaraderie, as always, particularly with ‘fallers’. Without exception, a runner
will give food or support (time) to another in difficulty. I think this is one
of the main reasons I enjoy this type of running.
Fell only once, fortunately at speed on
downhill so more of scrape than impact. Hit ‘dark tunnel’ around 100K but I knew
the finish would eventually be mine.
If you want a tough, rocky race – this
is the one for you.
