SCVAC Indoor Track & Field Championships 3k walk
19th February 2017
On Sunday 19th February, I competed in my first ever 3,000 metre Race Walk at the Lee Valley Athletic Centre. I took part in the Southern Counties Veteran Athletic Club Indoor Track and Field Championship. This was a new distance for me and I felt excited but somewhat nervous to take part. I was aware of a competitor who recently competed in the World Masters Athletic Championships and is a very experienced race walker. I chose to stay behind this fella and use him as a pacer. However, when I begun to receive bent knee warnings, I needed to slow down and focus my attention on maintaining the correct technique. On Sunday's race, a competitor actually got disqualified because he received too many warnings and received the red card. Thankfully, I managed to stay legal and finish the race in a quickish time of 16 minutes and 53:28 seconds. I felt surprised to learn that I achieved a 'New Championship Best Performance' for the 3K walk distance for my age category! I now have my sights on my final race walk this Sunday, again at Lee Valley Athletic Centre, by competing in a 2,000 metre race walk at the 2017 England Athletics Masters Association Indoor Track & Field Inter Area Challenge.
