Box End Duathlon
The idyllic Box End Water Ski Park was once again the setting for another multi sports event organised by Quadrac Racing.
11.11.07 “Remembrance Day”. Will also be remembered by all those intrepid competitors who took part in the first ever Box End Duathlon. The cold blustery conditions were going to make a harsh tough race but this would not perturb the 55 eager athletes waiting to tackle the course.
The race started @ 09.30 after a minute’s silence. The massed ranks of runners pounded their way around the first 4.4km run lap, which takes in all the best undulating features around Box End Park. Frenchman “Cedric Lassonde” made his intentions clear from the start as he took an early and commanding lead, even the lead bike had problems keeping up.
After the first run lap the already sweating and weary competitors, it is a tough lap, entered into transition to pick up their mountain bikes and head out for a further 3 laps. It soon became apparent that it was to be no picnic on a bike and the race was going to be a toughie. The short hill though not to steep seemed to sap the strength out of most of the athletes. There was a lot of sweat & grinding of gears as the fought their way around the course.
After each bike lap the competitors have to dismount from their trusty steeds to negotiate an obstacle, in the form of a large plastic pipe, where they also had to pick up a wrist band. There was a wide spread of ability levels, with some hard core die hards and those trying a duathlon for the first time. Their were several juniors competing and a good show from the ladies. One gentleman had to swoop his bike at the end of his second lap due to a puncture, however he would not let this perturb him and he went on to complete the course.
After 3 gruelling & energy sapping bike laps it was with great relief to the competitors that they could enter transition and leave behind that lump of metal that they had lugged around for what seemed like an eternity. All that was left was one final push for the last run lap. You could tell from the determination on the faces of the athletes that it was going to be tough but they would not be defeated.
The first person to cross the line was the race leader from the start “Cedric Lassonde” in a time of 01:12:40; it was to be a family affair as his brother, Farien Lassonde, crossed in 3rd in a time of 01:17:36. Second place went to James Miller in a time of 01:16:16. The first lady to finish was Alison Cooper in a time of 01.34:50. And the first junior was Will Stockton in a time of 01:29:29
Unfortunately during the race one competitor came off her bike. St John’s was quickly on the scene and she was whisked away to hospital for a check up. We all wish her a speedy recovery.
The race would not have been possible with out the small team of dedicated people who make up Quadrac Racing and all the volunteers who marshalled on the day. I would like to say a big thanks to everyone who helped out.
I would also like to thank our sponsors Priory Marina cycles and Jordans, and finally a big thanks to Box End Park for allowing us to use their wonderful facilities.
