The Breaston Beast

Rob Bishop and I headed up to Derbyshire for our last marathons of 2010- The Breaston Beast, which was organised by Rory Coleman in conjunction with the 100 Marathon Club. On the way we debated what sort of a run it would be, after all, with a name like that it could be a killer. On the other hand we had heard whispers that it was a sociable event with a pub meal at the end. It turned out to be more social than killer which was quite a relief.

At 8:30 we were parked up in a deserted pub car park wondering if everyone was enjoying coffee and cakes at Rory's house. Eventually a couple of cars pulled up making for a grand total of 6; Rory Coleman (7 MDS completions), Roger Biggs (600+ marathons and chairman of the 100 Marathon Club), Jen Salter (3rd lady MDS finisher, UK triathlete), Gina Little (370 marathons), Rob Bishop (59 marathons, 47 this year) and myself (55 marathons, 30 this year). Obviously I need to try a bit harder!! Perhaps if I'd done this bit of research in advance I might have cowered at home but this is what makes running such a wonderful sport; it doesn't matter to other runners how far or how fast you can run.

Keeping to the social theme we ran together at the pace of the slowest though everyone was more than capable of the pace that was set. I sent a message to Sylvia telling her not to hurry to the pub! Sylvia, bless her, was taking my mother back home while I was out running. Rory took us on a nice loop out in the country and whilst it wasn't quite the Peak District it still looked great with the snow on the ground. The snow "up North" was not as thick as around Bedford so the going was quite easy. We called in to Tescos in lieu of a water station and every now and again Rory would encourage us to lighten the load of flap jacks that he was carrying.

The official Garmin time was 6:01:30 for 26.20 miles.
