As I had the good fortune of being sent to Singapore for work and being there over the weekend I decided to find a race to take part in. A quick internet search found the Race Against Cancer 10km organized by the Singapore Cancer Society. This was my chance to make my debut on the international stage!

Registering for the race took place 4 days before and I duly went to pick up my number and accompanying race pack which included a sports bag, a tech top, a packet of cream crackers, three sachets of “Udder Cream” (moisturizer apparently) and three sachets of intimate feminine wipes. I was beginning to wonder whether entering the race was a serious mistake!

The race started at 7.30am – which should have been a warning to me but I am British so decided that temperatures of 32˚ and 85% humidity are no problem to a finely tuned athlete such as me! I duly arrived at the start area to discover that I would be running with a select group of 1,073 people running the 10k with over 8,500 running one of either 5k, 10k or 15k – a somewhat bigger field than I am used to!

Start etiquette left something to be desired with some of those lining up at the front intent on walking the whole way. This meant that the first 2km were spent using my recently sharpened elbows to manoeuvre past. Once I settled in to race pace  I enjoyed the views of the coast and the numerous container ships plying their trade and took full advantage of the water stops every km or so!

I got round in a creditable 53 minutes and something and in 140th position for the 10k - quicker than my planned 55mins – so was pleased.  With the temperature this was not a course to beat my PB!

And what of the goodies on offer at the end? A big blingy medal, a banana, a bottle of Yakult, a can of Red Bull (diet of course), and yes, you guessed it, some more sachets of feminine wipes.

Would I do it again and would I recommend it – absolutely yes!
