Outlaw 2015: Race report

Organised by 1 Step Beyond Promotions, 2015 was the sixth Outlaw Triathlon, which (in their own words) is fast becoming even more legendary than Robin Hood, the Major Oak and Brian Clough!

The event is based at Nottingham's National Water Sports Centre which was easy to get to via the A1 and with plenty of accommodation close by (including a spacious campsite opposite the entrance to the Sports Centre) there are no logistical issues.

I kept an eye on the weather forecast for the event and initially it looked quite promising however the great British weather did not let us down and the nearer the event became the worse the weather looked!!!

We arrived on the Friday for registration. The tent was up, it was cold and raining but we were not going to be put off the weather conditions as we lit our barbeques!!!! Saturday was dry and sunny so it made racking bikes etc. easier. The race briefing went on a bit long (90 minutes!!!!!) however there was a free supply of Erdinger on tap. Bikes in transition we watched some of the ‘big swim’ which was taking place in the lake - well done the Wolvaardt family.

Sunday morning, race day, saw a cold start but it was dry with a beautiful crimson sky. The mass swim start kicked off at 6am. Tony managed to get a good start on the swim but I started like a beached whale in water about a foot deep!!! I finally got going, I felt like I had been swimming for ages when I finally reached the first orange buoy (about 1 mile out) but the way back seemed to be better……decent swim for Tony but crap swim out the way for me it was time for the bike.

The bike course is 3 loops, 1 x the southern loop, 1 x the northern loop and then once more round the southern loop. Some roads were closed, some were coned off and some were fully open. The course was well marked with traffic management on most junctions and the and there were plenty of marshals to help. The aid stations were well organised with an array of food and drink.

The southern loop was rural and undulating with very little traffic, the northern loop had a nasty little hill in it which ended up on a busy road. The impending rain started about half way through the northern loop…and it never really stopped as soggy cyclists returned to the National Water Sports Centre.

The run started round the lake, then an out and back to the embankment, round the lake again then out and back to the embankment then round the lake, then round the lake again to the finish. It was flat and well supported. Despite the weather this race was truly well organised, well marshalled and well supported, it should definitely be on your ‘list of races to do’.
