Katarina reports on the Fit For Heroes Woburn 10K.

Four Harriers ran in the official Fit For Heroes Woburn 10K. I say 'official' because two others ran the course earlier as the race time had to be put back an hour due to the amount of runners paying on the day for the 5K and 10K race. I'm not sure how many runners actually turned up but as it was for a worthwhile cause, the more the merrier. The course was later suggested to be 5.3 miles long (at most).

There were different starting times but a mix of 5K and 10K runners in the groups. I was soon wishing that I had started in one of the earliest groups as the Harriers were in the final group to start and everyone apart from me looked really fit and healthy. I certainly didn't want to be last in.... I may have got lost or chased by a little old deer!

The course was two laps of the groups so a mixed terrain and quite uneven with a couple of hills. There were no distance markers and the water stations were unmanned so the runners had to open the 2 litre water bottles themselves and pour the water into the cups (which had to be taken out of the plastic wrapping first!).
Fortunately I was wearing my running watch so despite the invisible markers I tried to work out the possible speed and timing that I needed.

As I entered the last few hundred metres I couldn't see the large clock that was supposed to be at the finish but looking down at my own watch I could have died when I saw that not only had I got a PB it was by 15 minutes quicker!! I just had to sprint a bit quicker then.

It was good to have a manned water station at the end, a nice sit down with chips and a wander around the stalls with a couple of helicopters flying overhead. The weather and the company was perfect. Sadly I must have missed the ferret racing when I was doing the run but there's always next year....
