With some convoluted planning I managed to
engineer it so that I found myself in Leatherhead on Sunday lining up for the
Tanners 30 marathon. I was holding 4 sheets of written instruction and an OS
map with half the route drawn on it because I'd spent too much time talking to
friends. The backpack held the full 2 litres of water and electrolyte, some
snacks, suncream and various other bits and pieces that were to prove less
useful but are as well to carry (lightweight waterproof, compass, whistle,
phone, wallet, emergency food). The route was superb and we spent less than a
mile on roads. It was remarkably well marked with little yellow arrows pinned
to posts and trees at every turn so the map got little use. Terrain varied
between open fields, wooded paths, gentle inclines (particularly nice one
above the Denbies vineyard - see photos) and a few not so gentle climbs up Box
Hill. Having said that, running down Box Hill was harder!
