Stevenage 5K Race Report

A chosen few brave Harriers decided to attempt the first of the Stevenage 5K series and its new race course. It was inevitably dark and cold. Ironically, it was safe to wear shorts and a vest largely because the wind condition was thankfully virtually non-existent. Adam ended up running the race since he had entered it originally, despite his right calf injury. We managed to gather where the start position was, although the Organisers only placed the Start banner literally five minutes prior. A large amount of runners then congregated behind the sprayed line and most struggled to hear the marshal. The course was downhill and uphill throughout the dark and somewhat leafy cycle paths of Stevenage. Fortunately, no-one bumped into a silly motorbike cyclist that was seen earlier on the path prior to the race. The last two kilometres ended up largely uphill and no finish sign was imminent. Unsurprisingly, Simon Fawcett was the first Harrier home followed by the long-standing runner of Justin Openshaw, along with Veronica Singleton and Peter Lawley. Alison Cooper happily announced she achieved a personal best time in the well-lit race headquarters while we took advantage of the complimentary biscuits, crisps, bananas, hot and cold drinks.  Not a bad night after all in the town of Stevenage
