Race Report by Richard Piron:

This was the inaugural English Team Sprint Triathlon Championships and attracted 17 teams from as far afield as Cumbria.  The great thing about the scoring system is that it’s not just the fastest that get the ‘points’ but to have people across all the age groups.  We spoke to quite a few other competiors in transition and many of them said “my team only wanted me ‘cause I’m old!”   There was also indiviual race at the same time in which Pete Mealing took part in.

Having arrived back from holiday at midnight Saturday night and not knowing what time registration opened and the race started, I thought I should make an early start. Tried to get all my stuff together the night before, got very little sleep, woke at 4am, got my kit on (in the dark) set off and was the first competitor to arrive at 5.40am!  With an hour to go,  I stripped off in transition and realised I’d got my Tri-shorts inside out much to the amusement of the team.

Anyway,  the races (3 waves, ladies first, then 7 minutes later the over 45s, then the under 45s)  got under-way at 8am.  The water temp. was just about OK, pretty clear until the final 100m when it got badly churned up with weeds and mud.  The cycle was a single lap through Weston Underwood to the Newport Pagnel road then left up the notorious Chichely Hill.  It seemed like there was a head wind most of the way round especially on the road out from Olney.  Good to see Steve Turner marshalling/ giving verbal abuse in equal measure at the Newport Pagnel turn.    The run was 2 laps in Emberton Park so pretty fast and mainly sheltered from the wind.

For some club members it was their first venture to open water racing – so well done to Sam and Paula.  Many Age Group placings – Angie,  Lynne and Richard, with Gill awarded 1st Female Vet over 40, and Geoff 3rd Male Vet over 40 – in addition to 1st in their age groups. Several PB’s were also achieved on the day (see results)

Well Angie’s team secured 5th out of 17 an excellent result.  A great event and hopefully we can ‘engineer’ a winning team next year!

BBQ afterwards was fun, despite several showers. Helium balloon fun was the highlight of the BBQ.
