As much as I love you all I didn't want to spend 'my' 30th wedding anniversary celebrating the Harriers 30th year in Bournemouth. To lure Noel away I found a marathon in Jersey to enter. 2000 of the 2500 entrants actually run the relay so there was quite a party atmosphere with friendly team rivalry and banter.
Noel and I were accosted for an
interview by BBC Jersey thanks to our Bedford Harrier shirts.
Not sure if we made the cut though. Jonathan Edwards started us off
through the streets of St Hellier then it was, up, up, up along
leafy lanes, past reservoirs and through villages all with
supporters cheering from gardens. Church goers handed out sweets
and people played music from their cars. The relay runners who
had started half an hour later all had an encouraging word as
they went past. The marshalling was brilliant. There were
lots of junctions and every one would have at least one marshal
and an honorary policeman stopping traffic.
Round the airport and I had a lift
when I recognised the parkrun route along a disused railway
line. Not least because it was downhill. At 22 miles we turned
onto the sea front. All flat but - oh my goodness- the wind. I
was so pleased to see the finish line. I collected a foil
blanket and joined Noel in the finish marquee where he made use
of my free beer and burger tokens as I had a well earned cup of
tea.
