Biddenham 10k Photos

Phil Gray's Race Report:

'What a glorious September morn as yours truly cycled to Biddenham at 10 a.m. Why you might ask? I often ask myself that question but I never get a straight answer. A little matter of the Biddenham River 10k and a number of Harriers participating and helping out in the guise of Steve Crane { does he ever go to bed ? } Martin, John, Tony and compare Jack Keenan. Minutes ticked away till 11 a.m. as one and all left Biddenham behind and addressed a testing 10k. I captured some of the action on camera as the winner appeared after 36 minutes, with Morgan not too far behind in 37 minutes and 3rd place on the day. Andy and Stuart had their own duel in the sun, with Andy the victor this day. Bob Wells also going well as were all the Harriers who went the distance on a glorious day in Biddenham. Thanks to all who made the whole thing possible, to all who went the distance and to that vital  ingredient, glorious sunshine. Time for a shower then lunch. Phew! '

Dunstable 10 & 20
Sunday 18th September

RACE REPORT

On the same day as the GNR, it was a shame that these events did not attract more support, especially as it was a very enjoyable run in some spectacular scenery.

The 20 mile and 10 mile events shared the same start before separating at about the four mile point.

Suet Lua got off to a very fast start, disappearing into the morning mist, and I didn't see her again until just before four miles when she followed the 10 mile course whilst I continued on the 20 mile route.  At the beginning the route was well marked with red and white tape but, as the course got further away  from Dunstable, the markers became a bit scarce with the result that many people got lost with the result that any hopes of decent times went out the window so people just relaxed and enjoyed  the run.

The Dunstable club produced a very nice certificate which was a change from the usual tee-shirt which shrinks to nothing.

Chris reports on the race below,

"The Wellingborough 5 is a good race, unfortunately it is wedged between Blisworth and Cranfield so does not attract the same numbers as the other events.  It starts on the outskirts of Wellingborough with the first mile flat, the next mile and a half ightly down hill, before rising ightly to mile 4.  The final mile being flat.

I arrived in good time to get the screening for the Embankment and Half Marathon done before a quick warm up and into the race. The weather was warm but breezy and provided a good warm up after a number of injuries, the time was not fast, but I got around to fight another day"

No times are available for Wellingborough yet.

The next big race is the Cranfield 5 this Friday 12th August. Almost 30 Harriers ran last year on what is a fast course. Entries this year on up on 2004. The race is organised by Richard Hales.

' A balmy July evening as Cranfield University welcomed one and all to the annual jamboree that is the Cranfield University 5k. Good to see so many familiar faces as race time approached and an opportunity to catch some amuisng images on camera. It would be the mother of all tuses between Tony Dadd and Sean Newbury to see who would depose Kevin Willett, the current Club 5k Champion at this event. Sean prevailed in a personal best of 16.59, with Tony not too far behind and Stuart Barlett making up the first three Harriers home. I located at the Kingey Grage to capture the frantic action in front of me as a sea of yellow and black diagonal stripes came tearing past me. It would be equally as exciting in the ladies event as Shantna Trowell got the better of Donna McEwen to win the Ladies Club 5k title in 19.10 ish. Carla Fisher made up the first three Harrier ladies home and a bonus in the guise of the Ladies Team Prize was theirs. Well done ladies. Not for the faint hearted as I marshalled all weekend and was more that respectful of all those who addressed and completed the events. Good to see so many Harriers participating. Tony Dadd, I believe, was second overall in the Marathon Challenge as I captured most of the action on camera and one or two amusing images were included in the end results. 'Belvoir Walk on a bright June morning and an early start for yours truly and a lot of others too. Early start as in breakfast at 6 a.m. and pick up by Crane Enterprises at 6.30.am.Brian also picked up as Harrold soon  appeared a little after 7. Plenty to do before the main event like empty the van, set the course out, etc, etc ... or yes, and car parking supervision as well. People arriving from around the county and beyond. Flitwick Flyers in numbers as were Ware Joggers and some lady from Hipson Hobblers. Very bizarre as game time approached at 10 a.m. Good to see some familiar faces in the guise of Nora, Jacinta and her sister. Jeanette I believe. 300 addressing a demanding 10 kilometres that took in Felmersham before heading back down Odell Road and the finish at Harrold Cricket Club. I captured the  action on camera. Richard Dorman looking good to secure 4th place in 36 minutes, with Franck not too far behind as second Harrier on the day. What an atmosphere and a surprise for that Harrier legend Maurice Crook, who received an Honorary Membership from Brian. Well deserved Maurice. Well done to all who went the distance in Harrold, to Chris Capps and all his crew and to all who made the whole thing possible.

If anyone did a pb at Bedford, let's know at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk

Phil Gray reports on the Bedford 6:

It was a long trek for your truly from Belvoir Walk to Wentworth Drive and the Bedford 6 road race. Good to see so many Harriers participating as I located near Mark Rutherford Upper School to capture the action. Minutes later and it was game for all participating. Stuart Bartlett and Frank Monmont having a battle royal to be first Harrier home, with Stuart the victor in a p.b. of 35.12, Frank second, and Richard Piron making up the first three Harriers home. Shantha had a cracking race to be first Harrier lady on the night, with that lady Veronica not too far behind. Good also to see some familiar faces strutting their stuff and good to see Zoe upholding the Willett humour as first Willett home in another good time, I believe. What a cracking night and some incredible action captured on camera. Well done to all Harriers who went the distance as darkness settled across the land and yours truly made the short journey home. Phew!'

Halstead Marathon,Eye 10k & Oxford  10K
Sunday 15th May 2005

A fairly quiet weekend for Harriers racing with Ian Marshall and Richard Ogborne running in the Eye 10k and Bob Wells running in Oxford. First of all though, must mention Andy Purdy who ran his first marathon at Halstead. Andy, who describes the occasion as being hot, hilly and hard, finished in 4:15:47. The race at Eye went well for Richard with his time of 45:44 being a pb by 35 secs. Ian's time of 43:30 was also 2 mins 27 secs faster than his Eye 2004 run. The Oxford Town and Gown 10k is a big race which usually attracts around 4,000 runners. Bob, who set his pb on the course in 2001, finished in around 39:20

The Rugby 6
Wednesday 11th May

Tony Barnes, Deirdre Bethune and Nora Haggart ran in the Rugby 6, the 2nd race in this year's 8-race East Midlands Grand Prix Series. Tony finished in 40:03 which was the exactly the same time as his 2004 Rugby run. Deirdre finished in 46:49 and Nora running her first race at Rugby did 48:11.

If anyone's times have been missed or they ran pb's let's know at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk

Phil Gray reports on the race:

' Stevington was the venue on this bright but overcast May morning as yours truly located near Oakley to capture all the action in the Stevington 12K. Good to see so many Harriers participating, 30 plus I believe, including the Horne duo of Graham and Jacinta and the more familiar faces of Richard Dorman and Morgan Walters to name but two. 11am and the runners set off on a demanding 12K loop, which is actually part of the Oakley event held in March. Richard and Morgan up with the leading group at about 3K. Not far behind a group of three that included Rob Millar and Paul Roberts. Richard would eventually be 1st Harrier home and 4th overall. A lot of Harrier ladies excelling on the day, including Emily, Carla and Veronica. Judith  Ingledrew clearly enjoying the event along with Sidney, both smiling when they passed me and  again at the finish. Well done to all Harriers who went the distance in Stevington. Phew! '

Silverstone 10k
Tuesday 3rd May 2005 @ 7.30pm

Two new club best times plus loads of pb's were set at the Silverstone 10k. The London Marathon
Sunday 17th April

The two club best times were set by Graham King in the MV50 category and Larry Corkery in the MV65. Graham's time of 2:54:34 was the first occasion he has finished in under three hours. An absolutely tremendous achievement especially as Graham was being troubled by a foot injury. Larry finished the race in 5:03:39 which was also highly commendable as he's also been suffering with injuries of late.

Among those getting pb's were Gary Horsman who improved his by 5 mins to 3:39:13, Dennis Hone  who ran 3:44:52, Jim Gannon who knocked 12 mins 36 secs of his previous best with 3:45:44, Nora Haggart finished in 4:03:44, Mark Holland who ran 4:07:26, Lynne Gingell who clipped 30 mins off her previous best to run 4:12:36, Suet Lua who improved her previous best by 6 mins to 4:21:21 and Andrea Ranson who ran her best marathon to date in 4:26:03.

Rotterdam Marathon
Sunday 10th April 2005

Great run by Tony Dadd who completed the Rotterdam Marathon in a tremendous time of 2:48:58. Tony's run was an improvement of 1 min 27 secs on his previous marathon pb of 2:50:25 which he set at Rotterdam in 2004. Also getting a pb at Rotterdam was Richard Ogborne. Richard's time of 3:59:00 was a near 15 mins improvement on his previous best for the distance of 4:14:41 which he set at Rotterdam in 2004. Well done also to Richard Piron who finished in 3:13:00. Richard is currently in training for the Opel Ironman in Germany in July.

Paris Marathon
Sunday 10th April

Another Harrier running a marathon on Sunday was Janet Lehain who made the journey to Paris for the event. Janet finished her first marathon in 4:09:47 and report's below on the experience.

Janet report's on her first marathon run.

"On Sunday 10th April, 35,000 runners gathered at the top of the Champs Elysees in Paris for the start of the city's 29th marathon.

The nerves I felt about the prospect of running my first marathon increased massively as I sat on the Metro on the way to the start, surrounded by crowds of very fast looking male runners all enjoying some pre-race banter, and wondering to myself what was I thinking of, entering a race where my grasp of the language isn't too hot? ...and where are all the women?! I
later found out only 15% of runners taking part were female

My doubts disappeared soon after I took my place at the start. I met a couple of other Brits who I ended up running with until well after 30km and so, my marathon experience with all the excitement and camaraderie really began.

I've been told by fellow Brits there that there is no comparison between London and Paris in terms of organisation and so on, but negatives aside the lack of loos, the cobbles, the thousands of banana skins I dodged after every 5km feeding station, this was a great marathon experience. Great monuments and architecture, plus a nice few kilometres through some
gorgeouy tranquil parkland.

The highlight for me was around the 30km point, running in and out of a couple of tunnels along the river Seine. Initially a bit miffed to find myself in a dingy tunnel, for the half mile or so it lasted, I was treated to an awesome atmosphere of chanting and singing, with an echo so powerful it felt it was a living being, chasing behind you and willing you to keep
running. What a great motivation!

Even though my own goal of 4 hours eluded me this time!, and it now hurts to sit on the loo come to think of it, all movement hurts I'm feeling delighted to have finished, and relieved that the reality of my first marathon experience was far more enjoyable than the amount of worrying I'd invested into the build up.

Good luck to all you Harriers who are taking part in London on Sunday - especially if like me it's your first. If I can walk by then, I'll come and cheer you on!"

Janet Lehain.

Sandy 10
Sunday 3rd April @10.30am

There was an excellent turnout of Harriers at the Sandy 10, our 10-mile championship race. In total, some 55 Harriers entered the event and almost 50 finished which was the highest number of entrants from any one club. Biggleswade AC, who organised the race, award a trophy - the Erlensee Cup - to the club which has the most participants. Suet Lua collected this on our behalf.

The first Harrier to finish was Sean Newbury in 62:41. Sean's time was a pb. The second and third Harriers to cross the line,  Alistair Fadden and Rob Miller were separated by just one second 65:35 and 65:36 respectively after fighting out a very close finish.

The first lady Harrier to finish was Donna McEwen in 68:53. Donna's time was a pb by 2 mins 13 secs and comes just just over a week since her previous 10-mile pb was set at Maidenhead on Easter Monday. The second lady Harriers was Veronica Singleton in 69:39. Veronica's time, which was her fastest 10 for a few years, set a new club LV40 best time for the distance. The third lady Harrier to finish was Carla Fisher in 72:51. Carla's time may also have been a pb. Donna, Veronica and Carla's performances won them the ladies team prize. Sophie Howman  who finished in 74:11 also won an award for being the 1st Sandy Lady to finish on the day.

Setting the second new club best time at Sandy was Deirdre Bethune. Deirdre's run of 81:45 improved the previous LV55 best for the distance by a huge 27 mins 24 secs.

Among the Harriers getting pb's that we know about were Adam Hills who finished in 68:40
first time under 70 mins, Mike Barnett who improved his pb by around 3 mins to 84:54 and Maria McBeth who knocked 4 mins 15 secs of her pb to 99:31.  Quite a few Harriers also ran their first 10-mile race, so very well done to them as well.

Finally, if anyone else did a pb or ran 10-miles for the first time, let's know at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk

++++++++++++++

Phil Gray Reports on the race:

Sandy Upper School was the venue for the Sandy 10 on a glorious April morning, acting also as the Club 10 Mile Championship.  It was good to see Harriers out in force and some incredible performances were the end result. Sean Newbury was on fire to claim the 10 Mile Championship in 62:41 and followed home by Alistair, Rob Miller, Bob Wells and Steve Gaunt. Donna McEwen also on fire as first Harrier lady and what a surprise, yet another PB by 2 minutes, followed inby Veronica and Carla. These three ladies also claimed the Ladies Team prize and the club as a whole claimed the Erlensee Cup for having the most participants in the race. More excellent performances on the day and too numerous to mention as I captured all the action near the finish. Well done to all who went the distance on the day and thanks to Suet Lua for collecting the Erlensee Cup on behalf of the club. Wow and double wow.

Maidenhead Easter 10
25th March 2005

Donna McEwen ran another pb, this time for 10 mile, at Maidenhead over Easter.  Donna's time of 71:06 was a 2 mins 56 secs improvement on her previous best for the distance of 74:02 which was set at Leighton last September. Suet Lua also made the long trip to Maidenhead and finished in 89:33.

The first lady Harrier to finish was Carla Fisher in 2:39:37. Carla was running her first Oakley 20. The second lady Harrier was Deirdre Bethune in 2:43:23 followed by Nora Haggart in 2:55:50. This was Nora's first Oakley 20.

Among the Harriers who improved their time over previous Oakley 20s was Gary Horsman who clipped around 1 min 19 secs off his 2004 run in 2:44:26. Harriers running in their first Oakley 20 included Ian Goodwin 2:34:48, Kevin McPhillips 2:37:31, Dennis Hone 2:46:53, Peter Quigley 2:50:36, Bruce Mehew 2:59:44, Janet Lehain 3:04:04, Lynne Gingell  3:11:53, David Prior 3:12:21, Peter Gillott 3:15:02, Bill Morant 3:16:17, Peter Pack 3:17:26 and  Rachel Burrage 3:23:50.

If anyone else ran their first Oakley 20 and is not mentioned or improved their times over previous years, let's know at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk

Phil Gray reports on the day:

'Oakley began early on Saturday 19 March and was reaching a conclusion mid-afternoon on Sunday 20 March. It was a real roller coaster as I and a lot of other people appear to have spent most of the weekend at Lincroft Middle School. It takes of a lot of work for all concerned as runners prepared for the start at 10am. Almost 600 in total for both races as Richard Hales got proceedings underway, while I addressed my role as Fun Run Manager. Co-ordinating with Kevin, the 1 Mile event got underway at 10.23 ish and all participating enjoyed a medal and a KitKat at the finish. Good to see so many Harriers participating in the main event and all concerned welcomed refreshments provided by Zoe and Co. A major thanks to all who gave up part or all of their weekend to make the whole thing possible and not forgetting the three extremely wise men in the guise of Brian Mccallen, Steve Crane and Kevin Willett. Yours truly welcomed a hot bath and meal in that order. Phew!'

Silverstone Half Marathon and the Grizzly
Sunday 13th March 2005

Two of the main races run by Harriers over the weekend were the Silverstone Half Marathon and the 18-mile Grizzly in Devon.

In a finishing field of almost 5,900, at least five Harriers achieved pb's and another four ran their first half marathon for the club at Silverstone.  Stuart Bartlett was the first Harrier to finish and the 115th overall in a time of 1:24:31. Amongst those setting new pb's were Adam Hills 1:30:14, Michael De Cesare 1:31:16, Mark Ingledew 1:48:03, Judith Ingledew 1:56:58 and Nyree Hone 2:04:34. Running their first half marathons for the club were Ken Toye 1:43:14, Liz Stockton 1:52:48, Sydney Smith 2:03:43 and Rachel Bridger 2:21:15.

Down in Devon, eight Harriers ran in the Grizzly. The Grizzly is basically a tough 20 mile cross country course which can be a bit 'testing'. The first Harrier to finish was Veronica Singleton  in 3:03:20. This was the first time Veronica has run in the race. The second Harrier to finish was Donna McEwen in 3:13:32. This was also Donna's first Grizzly. The first Harrier man to finish was Cliff Smith in 3:14:55. The race had 10 major climbs and involved running several miles over shingle/pebbled beach and a stretch of approx 100 metres of thick knee deep mud. Lovely stuff!

 Reading Half Marathon
Sunday 5th March

At least three Harriers ran at Reading, and all recorded good times. Steve Daniels was the first to finish in 1:31:06. Steve's time was a new pb by 59 secs, his previous best was a 1:32:05 at Wootton last December. Jenny Lovesey also had an excellent run and finished in 1:39:21. Jenny's previous Reading times include a 1:50:41 in 2002 and a 1:52:58 in 2003 while her best half marathon run since 2001 was a 1:42:11 at Amsterdam in that year so above time may be a pb also. Finally well done also to Janet Lehain who knocked  8 mins 52 secs of her previous half marathon best to finish in 1:44:01.

UK Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships
Saturday 5th March 2005

Well done also to Veronica Singleton who represented Bedfordshire in the Inter-counties X-C championships in Nottingham on Saturday. On a cold and miserable day, Veronica completed the 8k course in 37.11.

Phil Gray reports:

'Yours truly was on the road again on a bright March morning as Bedfordshire athletes headed north to Nottingham. Why Nottingham? A little matter of the UK Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships at Wollaton Park and a little matter of Veronica Singleton representing Bedfordshire for the first time at this level in the Senior Women event over 8k. Not a day for heroes as the weather curtailed a lot of my photo taking as snow showers combined with lots of rain did little to cheer the soul. Veronica did the business on the day as did all the Bedfordshire athletes who represented their county on a bleak day in Nottingham. Some good results for the majority as we headed south along the M1 to Bedford and a nice, hot meal.'

Daffodil 10K & Half Marathon
Sunday 27th February

The Harriers results from the Daffodil 10k and Half Marathon are finally in. First to finish in the 10k was Rob Miller in 40:09. Rob's time was around a minute and a half faster than in the Daffodil 10k 2004.  The second Harrier was Rachel Gilbert in 45:25. Rachel's time was just 1 second ower than her Ely 10k run in December. The third Harrier to finish was David Gallagher in a new pb of 48:28. David's previous best was 48:33 at Standalone last year. Also well done to Yvonne Barnett  who ran her first race for the Harriers. Yvonne finished in 68:01.

The first Harrier to finish in the Half Marathon was Ian Goodwin in 1:36:38. A good run by Ian in his first race for the club. The second to finish was Simon Smith in a new pb of 1:37:46 and the third home was Gabriel Arpaia also in a new pb of 1:41:47.

Phil Gray reports on the Daffodil races:

'Yet another brass monkey day at Castle Ashby in Northamptonshire for yours truly and the Bedford Harriers posse out in force. Two options today; 10K or a Half Marathon. Mike and Yvonne Barnett were kind enough to transport yours truly and Suet Lua, who was addressing the Half Marathon, to the venue. Chaotic scenes as the start of the 10k was delayed by over 20 minutes and kicked off just before 10.55, as over 1000 streamed down the main road before doing a major loop round the estate. Equally as chaotic was the start of the Half Marathon and
it kicked off literally minutes before the lead runner of the 10k event appeared on the horizon and doing a respectable 32 minutes. Rob Miller was  first Harrier home in 40 minutes, Rachel Gilbert was the second Harrier to finish and David Gallagher was the third. More Harriers followed as Mike and Yvonne completed the distance in style. Images now well and truly bagged, Mike and Yvonne took moi back to Bedford to a nice hot meal. Well done to all who went the distance at Castle Ashby!'

The Bury 20
Sunday 27th February

Over at the Bury 20, Graham king, who is training for London finished in 23rd place overall in a time of 2:10:55, which was a pb by 22 mins 33secs. Graham tells us that the conditions were appalling with snow and ice underfoot and also blizzards and strong winds. The temperature was +3 but felt more like -5 and the last ten miles was against the wind. Not the sort of conditions for a training run let alone a race. An excellent time non the less.

Woburn 10k
Sunday 20th February 2005

Some good performances by the Harriers at Woburn. The first to finish and the 25th overall was Matt Burgin in 38:01. This was Matt's first 10k since Sharnbrook back in 2001 so it was probably a pb. Also getting a pb was the second Harrier to finish Adam Hills in 39:40. Adam's previous 10k best was 40:37 at Biddenham last October. Shantna Trowell was the first lady Harrier to finish and the second lady overall in 40:06. A good performance by Shantna who was running her first road race for the club. Also running well was the second lady Harrier to finish Andrea Ward  in a new pb o f 46:19. Andrea was the 3rd LV40.

At least seven other Harriers got pb's. The list included Gabriel Arpaia whose 45:06 was a pb by three mins,  Elaine Munday who knocked around 2 mins of her previous best to finish in 49:43, Leigh Price who improved her pb by around 3 mins to 55:52, Linda Wilding who finished in 56:48 a 30 secs improvement, Lyn Banks who ran 56:52  a pb by 4 mins, Jane Sizer who clipped a minute of her pb to finish in 57:45 and Maria McBeth whose 60:45 was also a new best.

If any other Harriers ran pb's and have not been mentioned, let's know.

Phil Gray's report on the day.

'Not a brass monkey in sight as Paul Hudson and I made our way to Woburn Safari Park for the annual 10k event in less than ideal conditions. In fact, so many were participating, well over a 1000, the start was delayed by 20 minutes. It was a day to wrap up well as all participating addressed a demanding 10k.Bedford Harriers did not let us down as Matt Burgin did a storming 38 minutes, followed by young Adam in 39 and Shantna Trowell in an excellent 40 and 2nd lady on the day, I believe. Well done Shantna and to all Harriers who went the distance, including a certain Iva Barr at 77 years young. All welcomed a hot drink and much more on a day for heroes. Images in the bag and a hot drink inside, as Paul and I headed back to Bedford and a hot lunch.

Phil Gray

Well done Cathy.

Cathy Rogers who rows as well as runs, rowed her way to a gold medal at the Manchester Indoor Rowing Championship last Saturday 12th February in the sixth and final race in the 2004/05 Concept 2 British Indoor Rowing Grad Prix Series. Thanks to the result, Cathy also picked up a gold medal in her category for the series as a whole.

Cathy raced more than 430 other athletes over 2,000m on the Concept 2 Indoor Rower at the Manchester Velodrome. She finished in first place in the women's 40 plus lightweight category in a time of 7 minutes 42.2 seconds.

The event was the final indoor rowing event championship in this year's six event Grand Prix Series. The series kicked off in Newark and then moved to Cambridge, Southampton, Cardiff and Glasgow before finishing in Manchester.

Stamford 30k
13th February 2005

Some good early season form shown at Stamford with the three Harriers who ran in the race last year all running faster times in 2005. Tony Dadd, who was the first Harrier to finish and the 30th overall in a field of more than 500 ran 2:01:34, an improvement of 22 secs on last year. Jack Chana whose times so far in 2005 are all up on 2004, finished in 2:45:52 a 90 secs improvement on 2004 and Suet Lua ran 2:59:09 which was more than eight mins faster than last year.

The first three lady Harriers to finish - Veronica Singleton 2:19:45, Donna McEwen 2:27:18 and Delores Wallis 2:30:29 also did well and picked up the ladies team award.

The other Harriers to run included John Gibson the second Harrier to finish in 2:14:20, Kevin McPhillips 2:23:22, Graham Short 2:24:42, Vic Byer 2:34:31, Richard Ogborne 2:35:52, Chris Capps 2:46:23, David Russell 2:47:16, Bruce Mehew 2:52:11 and Peter Gillott 2:53:16.

Below is Phil Gray's report on the day.

'Not a day for the fainthearted as Mike Barnard and I headed along the A1 to Stamford on a more than chilly February morn. Why? Mike and a number of Harriers were addressing the St Valentine Stamford 30k at Queen Eleanor School. It was good to see so many familiar faces as
start time approached. Mike was eager to get back on track but it was not to be his day as his body told him otherwise. I captured a video clip of the start as about 500 plus addressed a demanding 30K course. Mike lasted about 20 minutes before calling it a day. But we took
advantage to capture further action at about 26K. A chill wind as we awaited the leader, who was away and gone before the runner up appeared. Tony Dadd looking easy at this stage as my camera captured him and a number of Harriers in action. John Gibson was second
Harrier on the day and Kevin McPhillips third. Veronica turned in another excellent performance as first Harrier lady, with Donna second. A day of memories was at a close. Images in the bag and a hot lunch awaiting, Mike and I headed back to Bedford. Thanks to Mike and to all Harriers who went the distance in Stamford.'

3-Counties X-C @ Wellingborough
Sunday 6th February

The club ran in two cross-country meetings on Sunday. Firstly, the final race in the 2004/2005 five-race 3-counties X-C season took place at Wellingborough. The Harriers finished in fourth place in the event and in fourth place in the series overall. Secondly, three Harriers ran in the Eastern Vets X-C championships in Colchester and came away with both team and individual awards. Dave Sutcliffe, who organised the Harriers participation, has compiled a report on the day.

David Sutcliffe

'The Harriers M60+ team made the lengthy trip to Colchester for this race, and comfortably defended their last year's hard-earned title as East of England champions for their section.

With the team hit by absences through injury and other distractions, Maurice Crook, arguably the club's best senior veteran runner in recent years, was ''invited'' out of retirement. In his first race since this same event in 2002, Maurice ran a smooth impressive race to lead the team home in under 40 minutes for an undulating, muddy course of just over five miles. Next home, another in-form run by Bill Billington, despite at one point demonstrating how to descend a short ippery ope by way of means other than staying on one's feet. Completing the show was Dennis Gound, running his first race since last year's version of this event, and despite just recovering from suspected 'flu, hanging in to finish a few seconds behind Bill. Apart form team awards for 10-year age groups, Eastern Veterans award individual medals in each 5-year group. Maurice deservedly took the winner's medal for the M65+ section, while Dennis for the second time running took third place in the 60+ section'.

Phil Gray's report on the race.

'A dismal February morning as David took myself, Maurice and Dennis G to the Eastern Vets Cross-Country at High Woods Country Park in Colchester. Less than 2 hours later and our  destination had been reached. My role in this affair? Yes, you've guessed it in one. To capture Harriers in action and it produced some amazing images as it was like being stuck in a swamp. unable to escape. 11am and International Rescue was up and running across a demanding course, that varied in distance according to your age category. Dennis, Maurice and Bill attacked an 8k course and it was every bit as muddy as the resulting images clearly indicated. Maurice was 1st MV65 and Dennis G 3rd MV60 and Bill Billington made up the Bedford
Harriers three as they secured a well deserved 1st MV60 team award. David Sutcliffe acted as team manager and chauffeur for the day and deserves a special mention as do Bill, Maurice and Dennis.'

SEAA X-C Championships
@ Parliament Hills

Saturday 29th January

Graham Short was the sole Harrier running in the SEAA X-C Championships at Parliament hills on Saturday 29th January. Graham finished the notoriouy hard 3-lap 9-mile course in 721st position in a very respectable 1:13:37. Graham has written an excellent report on the race - Read it here.

Fred Hughes 10 & Benfleet 15
Sunday 30th January

Three Harriers ran in the Fred Hughes 10. Stuart Bartlett ran 62:59, Bill Billington did 78:07 and Suet Lua finished in 87:37. Both Stuart and Bill improved their 10 mile times over their fastest runs in 2004. Stuart's best for 10 in 2004 was a 65:46 at Dartmouth, while Bill's best  was a 79:05 at Sandy.  Suet Lua best in 2004 was a 86:01 in December on the fast Nene Valley course.

Richard Ogborne ran in the Benfleet 15. Benfleet, in Canvey Iand, is a tough cross country route with only about 1 mile on tarmac. Miles 5 and 9 are extremely muddy terrain over the Hadleigh Downs and its very difficult to actually run there! All in all a tough marathon training run. Richard finished in 2:10:00

Folksworth 15
Sunday 23rd January 2005

"On a particularly cold, sunny but dry day 5 intrepid Harriers ran the Folksworth 15.  Situated in north west Cambridgeshire the Folksworth 15 has become the traditional opener for the year and a must for those going on to the London Marathon, only 12 short weeks away.

The start just outside the village is on a deceptive down hill section where ice was the main challenge.  Unfortunately very quickly the terrain changes to a short hill before the first of the
2 big hills is encountered.  Once that is overcome, a flat open couple of miles with the wind behind is so quickly over before dropping down to a small hamlet called Caldicote.  Once
down, there is only one way and that is up,  and it is up one of those hills which is steep at first, but flattens out but goes on and on and on. Eventually the top is reached and the route turns back to Folksworth before the whole lot is repeated again, except the second time around the hills seem much harder.

So early in the year, times are not important for some,  just the opportunity run a challenging race over a good  course and finish in one piece and look forward to the next race".

Chris Capps

Cathy Rogers was the first Harrier to finish at Folksworth 15 in 1:55:17. Next to cross the line was Ian Marshall in 1:59:45. A minute later was Vic Byer in 2:00:44 followed by Chris Capps in 2:07:22. Peter Gillot completed the Harriers line up in 2:20:36.
